The story behind DJ UENO

The path
found me.

I did not set out to become a DJ. The journey started with friendship, karaoke, and a few unexpected moments that changed my direction.

Where it began

From karaoke nights to commanding the room.

In 2014, my friend Johnathan C. Smith invited me to karaoke at Fusion in Memphis. I kept turning him down—until life shifted and I finally showed up. That one night became a regular tradition and opened a door I never expected.

Later that year, I encouraged Johnathan to bring karaoke to Mugshots. Along with Devin “DJ Sweetz” Coleman, we launched Friday-night karaoke, created flyers, recorded videos, and eventually became known as The 3 Kings. I still did not consider myself a DJ, but I was learning how music, energy, and community could transform a room.

The turning point

Club Quarantine · 2020

A garage changed everything.

When the pandemic closed venues, Devin invited us to his house. His garage became “Club Quarantine.” He would DJ while Johnathan, T-Roc DA Mic, and I challenged one another to mix songs on equipment we barely understood.

After a few nights, I downloaded DJ software on my iPad and started practicing. Then I found an affordable controller and returned with my first mix. Those nights sparked something in me. The person who once insisted, “I’m not a DJ,” had finally found the craft he was meant to pursue.

Sometimes your purpose shows up in a garage during a pandemic.

DJ UENO today

Experience with intention

Music for every kind of moment.

Since then, I have DJed weddings, children’s parties, pool parties, clubs, private celebrations, and community events. Music has always been part of my life—from headphones in school and at work to the wide range of genres I now blend into every set.

My goal is to give every audience something fresh: an elevated, out-of-town experience shaped for the people in the room. I read the crowd, respect the moment, and build a soundtrack guests will remember.

The people behind the story

No journey happens alone.

Johnathan C. Smith, Devin “DJ Sweetz” Coleman, T-Roc DA Mic, and every guest who showed up for those early karaoke nights helped shape this journey. What began as friendship and fun became a purpose—and I remain grateful for everyone who helped me discover it.

Keep going

Your story is not over yet.

Life does not always announce when your moment is coming. The path may be late, messy, or completely unplanned. If something sparks purpose in you, follow it. Do not worry about who started first or how long it took. What is meant for you can still arrive right on time.
